Cloud Operations Engineer

London, England, gb

MongoDB’s mission is to empower innovators to create, transform, and disrupt industries by unleashing the power of software and data. We enable organizations of all sizes to easily build, scale, and run modern applications by helping them modernize legacy workloads, embrace innovation, and unleash AI. Our industry-leading developer data platform, MongoDB Atlas, is the only globally distributed, multi-cloud database and is available in more than 115 regions across AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Atlas allows customers to build anywhere—on the edge, on premises, or across cloud providers. With offices worldwide and over 175,000 developers joining MongoDB every month, it’s no wonder that leading organizations, like Samsung and Toyota, trust MongoDB to build next-generation, AI-powered applications.

MongoDB Atlas is the premier multi-cloud database-as-a-service built and operated by the makers of MongoDB. The Cloud Operations Engineering team at MongoDB is a worldwide team responsible for the consistent operational success of every MongoDB Atlas customer. As a Cloud Operations Engineer, you will help ensure the success of our Atlas customers, whether they are early startups or large multinational companies, cloud-native or just getting started with a digital transformation to the cloud. You are excited about the core mission of MongoDB, and the opportunity to join the team responsible for operating Atlas, the fastest-growing multi-cloud database-as-a-service in the world. You are prepared to be one of the early members of a 24/7/365 global cloud operations team in the Singapore region.

This role can be based out of our London office.

Why MongoDB is a fantastic place to work and build your career

  • Be a part of the company that’s reinventing the database, focused on innovation and speed
  • Enjoy a fun, inspiring culture that is engineering focused
  • Work with exceptionally talented people around the globe
  • Learn, contribute, and make an impact on the product and community
  • Work with some of the world's leading financial institutions, develop your skills in technologies common in the FSI industry, and contribute to the growth of MongoDB's presence in this critical vertical
  • Cool things you’ll do

Cloud Operations Engineer plays a pivotal role in overseeing and elevating day-to-day operations of MongoDB Atlas. This extends beyond routine tasks, encompassing strategic planning, active participation in technical discussions with internal teams, mentoring, and adeptly handling critical and escalated cases. Applicants must be critical thinkers who are quick to detect, resolve, or escalate issues that are sometimes broad in scope and difficult to trace.

This is a hybrid role that will require 3 days a week in our CITY office, with a specific focus on supporting MongoDB Atlas customers within the financial services sector. You will deliver results that meet our FSI customers stringent requirements for security and availability. This includes, but are not limited to:

  • Effective communication and stakeholder management, driving prompt resolution of incidents and building trust with FSI customers
  • Developing understanding of our FSI customer’s specific technologies, regulations, and policies to effectively address customer needs
  • Collaborating with teammates across our Customer Engineering organizations to ensure seamless handovers and cross-functional solutions for FSI customers
  • Coordinate and participate in a weekly on-call rotation, where you will handle short term customer incidents (proactively from automated monitoring or through reactive alerts via our Technical Services team)
  • Contributing to knowledge sharing and documentation of best practices, specializing in FSI customers
  • Help scale the worldwide Cloud Operations Engineering team with the strategic implementation and refinement of new processes and tools
  • FSI engineers may be exposed to material non-public information through the course of their work. For this reason, and due to the nature of the highly regulated industry in which our customers operate, FSI engineers may be subject to enhanced background checks and additional constraints around the trading of securities. The successful candidate will understand this and have willingness to participate in enhanced background checks and agreements with customers which may include, but are not limited to, customer review of any proposed trades on behalf of the FSI engineer, before they are executed.

    What you need

At MongoDB you will grow your career and skills, wear multiple hats, and be part of an operations team that works at the frontier of Cloud services and database systems. Experience with our product is not a prerequisite, but a background in SRE/Cloud Operations/Support within the financial sector, working directly with a large institution in various capacities—whether as an employee, contractor, or consultant—is critical for the role.

  • Systems engineering experience, including Linux performance, memory management, I/O tuning, configuration, security, networking, clusters, and troubleshooting
  • Proficient in comprehensive issue analysis across application, database, and storage layers
  • Experience with at least one of the major cloud providers (Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure)
  • Experience in monitoring, system performance data collection and analysis, and reporting
  • Knowledge of database operations and concepts
  • Solid understanding of web and network protocols and standards (HTTP, TLS, DNS, etc)
  • Capability to write small programs/scripts to solve short-term systems problems in at least 1 of the following programming languages: Java, Go, Python, Javascript
  • In addition to technical expertise

  • Proficient in timely and effective communication with diverse stakeholders, both internal and external. Demonstrates the capacity to influence decisions and adeptly tailors communication style to align with the needs of the audience.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to customer sites during the working week when required
  • A keen interest in learning new things
  • The right candidate will be excited by the opportunity to create impact both for our FSI customers, and influence MongoDB’s strategies and processes to scale exceptional FSI customer support.
