The Different Types of Driver
HGV Class 1

An HGV Class 1 licence (also known as a Category C+E licence) in the UK allows you to drive large goods vehicles (LGVs) that weigh over 3,500kg with a trailer that weighs more than 750kg.

It’s a requirement for driving articulated lorries, tanker vehicles, or trucks with long trailers.

HGV Class 2

A HGV Class 2 licence in the UK allows you to drive large goods vehicles (LGVs) or heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) that are over 3.5 tonnes but under 32 tonnes with a rigid body (i.e., the cab and the trailer are one unit).

This licence is also referred to as a Category C licence.

Forklift Driver

To become a forklift driver, you need to be at least 18 years old, hold a high school diploma or equivalent (such as a GED), and complete an OSHA-approved forklift operator certification course. This training teaches safe forklift operation, load handling, and workplace safety regulations.

After passing the certification test, you can apply for forklift operator positions and gain experience while maintaining your certification.

Van Driver

To become a van driver, you need to have a valid driver's license appropriate for the type of van you'll be driving, typically a standard Class D license for smaller vans. Some employers may require a clean driving record, a high school diploma or equivalent, and relevant work experience.

For larger vans or commercial vehicles, you may need a commercial driver’s license (CDL).
