BN3 SEN Support Worker
West Sussex, England, gb
client/child:
Will is 5 years old and lives with his mum and twin. He has a lovely relationship with his brother who is an incredibly caring and helpful little boy. Will is very cute and engaging. He loves being around others; he attracts people to him with ease! A few of his favourite activities are climbing, being on his trike, and arts and crafts. Will has cerebral palsy. He has just had surgery on his legs so requires intensive rehabilitation. Full training will be given. He has some speech difficulties which can make him feel frustrated at times. He eats orally and is not on any medication. He attends a great local mainstream school close to where he lives, but a driver is essential to take him to his Conductive Education and Hydrotherapy sessions. He is a wheelchair user, plus using a walker with assistance. He requires all personal care.
Overview of role:
There is a detailed rehabilitation programme in place to implement daily after school, but also downtime to engage Will in fun play activities, either at home or out and about. An important part of this role will be helping Will in regulating his feelings of frustration, especially when he is trying to articulate his physical needs and emotions. You need to think outside the box, bringing creative ideas to playtime. Will eats tea with mum and his brother and then through for a bath and teeth brushing. Once he is bathed and cozy in bed, he likes to have stories read to him until his mum comes to tuck him in for the night. This is a job share, with each support worker working alternate weeks.
Who this job would suit:
A creative, fun support worker who has great ideas and practical tools to help Will to develop his problem-solving skills. Clear boundaries need to be put in place so you will be consistent, confident, and thoughtful in your approach. You will also have oodles of energy and a great sense of humour to keep up with this wee spark!
What’s great about this job:
Comprehensive, bespoke training is provided by the rehabilitation team and ongoing supervision from the case manager. This will be a great opportunity to share your own experiences but also develop new skills, such as Conductive Education.
