GU25 SEN Support Worker
Surrey, England, gb
client/child:
Aleena is 28 years old and lives at home with her mum and her 18-year-old twin brothers. She is a sociable young lady who enjoys being in the company of others. Some of Aleena’s favourite things are exploring the outdoors, listening to music and puzzles – especially Connect 4! If tea and cake are on the cards, then even better! Aleena has a chromosome disorder and presents with significant developmental delay. She mainly communicates through her own unique signs, however at her day centre they use Makaton and PECS. If Aleena is happy you will know through smiles and laughter. Aleena has some autistic traits so being consistency and following routines are important. Occasionally she displays behaviours that may challenge, mainly hair pulling and hitting out, however with the right boundaries and structure in place these are well managed. Aleena will need prompts and reminders throughout the day to go to the toilet. Full personal care will be required (cutting nails, washing hair, make up, dressing up and showering) and Aleena wears pads for day and night.Overview of role: Aleena attends a day centre Monday to Friday, which she loves. During the week, you’ll help Alina get ready, assisting with breakfast and accompanying her to the day centre with the family’s driver. You are then on-call and free to do your own things from 9:30am to 3:30pm. Afternoon activities will vary depending on how Aleena is feeling and include going for walks, feeding the ducks, going to a café, and researching new things for Aleena to do. There are many facilities at home for Aleena to use, including a gym. All meals are prepared by the family’s chef. You will assist Aleena with her bedtime routine, she’s normally in bed between 9:00pm/9:30pm. At the weekends there is a lot more fluidity for activities and fun to be had.
Who this job would suit: The right person for this rolewill be committed and prepared to set boundaries, especially in the beginning as Aleena might be more testing initially. The family are really looking for someone with a big heart and genuine love for what they do. As the role does involve working two weeks on it will be better suited to someone who doesn’t have family commitments. Great opportunity for someone potentially looking to do further online courses/study.
What’s great about this job: Aleena is a joy to be around and once a rapport is built your relationship will really flourish. Both her current Support Workers have been with her for 10 years which speaks for itself! The family offer great facilities (gym & swimming pool) which are accessible to you.
