Have you ever dreamed of getting paid to see parts of this great country that you’ve never been able to see before? The life of a truck driver is extremely challenging, but if you’re up to the task, it can be very rewarding and worthwhile. If you’re contemplating taking on the challenges of becoming a truck driver, there are certain factors you have to take into account before hopping in that big rig.
With a ever-growing shortage of truck drivers and the demand for goods on the rise, many trucking companies will do whatever it takes to recruit new drivers. If you want to get into the trucking business, you must first obtain your Class A CDL license. The test for this license can be passed with little or no training. The problem, however, is that most trucking companies will not grant you a job simply because you’ve acquired your Class A CDL license. Proper training and/or experience is essential in landing a job with a reputable trucking agency.
You may want to consider paying for your training yourself, rather than having a trucking center pay for it for you. You’ll be forced to sign a contract and will not have the option of choosing which company you end up with in the end. Find a training center that will teach you everything you need to know with up to date equipment. Look for a trucking school that can offer one on one training and has your best interest at heart. Be sure to commit yourself to the program and study hard. You are gaining essential knowledge that will help you on those long hauls and will give you the know-how to handle problems on your own. There will be written exams and test. In order to graduate with a license and recommendation from the school, you’ll need to do well. Once you have this formal training under your belt, you can start shopping yourself out to potential trucking companies who are in desperate need for qualified drivers.
By paying your own tuition to the training school, you will have the ability to choose the trucking company that will be the best fit for you. Find one that will pay you a competitive wage and provide safe, modern equipment to drive. Be wary of companies that offer you promises that seem too good to be true. Often times, a company will say whatever they can to get you to sign a contract with them. The promises they made won’t be kept and you’ll be stuck with them until the contract runs out. Look for a large, reputable company that has a low turnover rate. Talk to drivers who have had years of experience working with the company and see how they feel about them. Discuss pay per mile, pay rate increases and any benefits that are important for you.
You’re on your way to a new career as a long haul truck driver. The life of a trucker is not an easy one, so be certain you are up to the task. It is a tough job, but if you’re made to be a truck driver and have what it takes to succeed, you’ll love the freedom and benefits it offers.
